Types of Fertilizers – Boosting Crop Growth and Soil Health

Fertilizers are essential for providing the nutrients required for healthy plant growth. They are broadly classified into two categories: organic fertilizers and inorganic (chemical) fertilizers.

  1. Organic Fertilizers – These fertilizers are made from natural sources like animal manure, compost, and plant residues. They improve soil structure and provide a slow release of nutrients, enriching the soil with organic matter. Examples include farmyard manure, vermicompost, and green manure. Organic fertilizers promote soil health, enhance moisture retention, and support sustainable farming practices.

  2. Inorganic (Chemical) Fertilizers – These fertilizers are made from synthetic or mineral sources. They provide essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in a concentrated form, leading to quick nutrient absorption. Examples include urea, superphosphate, and potassium chloride. While chemical fertilizers yield faster results, they can lead to soil degradation over time if not used properly.

  3. Biofertilizers – These are living microorganisms that help plants absorb essential nutrients like nitrogen. Rhizobium, Azotobacter, and Mycorrhizal fungi are common examples. Biofertilizers improve soil fertility and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
